Hi all,

I recently got an 1890 Hong Kong 20c and while looking for a mint mark I observed a small punch mark that is like the letter E. It is 1-2mm in size. Has anyone seen this type of mini-mark before?

Thanks

Not on Hong Kong silver coin but on Imperial Chinese coins and on smaller denominations as well.

I'm certain it's a merchant punch test to ensure that it is genuine silver instead of plated counterfeit.

That makes sense to me. If you rotate you picture almost 180 degrees, this punch looks a bit like the Chinese character "ren", meaning benevolence.

So is this what's known as a chop mark?
