I found this 1988-P quarter in a roll. As I checked the area where the mint mark would be--just to the right of Washington's pony tail--I saw nothing there. As I looked more closely, I saw what looked to be a letter mashed into the ribbon holding the pony tail in place. Sure enough, I could see what looks to be an incuse "P."

I'm not sure if that's going to come through in this photo or not. It's the best I could do using an iPhone and a magnifying glass.

Anyway, I'm wondering what we're looking at here? I've never come across such an odd placement of a mint mark since I began collecting. Thanks.

Pic too blurry to evaluate accurately.

@jps, as the frog says, this pic isn't going to help. Can you take one without the magnifying glass, but in sharp focus? I might be able to play around with that to give us something to evaluate. Thx.

Thanks, guys. I tried taking photos without the magnifying glass, but as I got close enough to see the area in question, it became blurry. When I was far enough away to not be blurry, you couldn't see the mint mark.
