Trying to fill the hole here. Not a great example I would say, yet will work for now. Presenting interpretable proof images is a challenge. I would say Type 2. PR 60. What say you?

I've always had trouble with these, but I would say Type 1 on this.

I thank you all for the feedback. This is a rather frustrating variety MM. I usually reference VV as far as styles. Their decription can be quite confusing here. 79's & 81's are both designated T2. MMS-010 is normal for 81 MMS-011 is not. MMS-009 is normal for 79 MMS-010 is not. That nice, genuine 81 w/MMS-001 is really hard to come by honestly as the subtle differences can be confusing. I do not usually purchase slabbed coins, this may be an exception. Gonna check out at least a 65. Then in the hole!

Yes, 1979 and 1981 both have type 1 and type 2 proof MM's - on ALL denominations these years. These are my 81 type 1 and 2 proof MM's: Notice how the spine of the type 1 is narrow or pointy from end to end, and the type 2 is flat. TYPE 1 TYPE 2

That is correct. I was wondering about the percentages of 81 w/MMS-010 compared to 81 w/ MMS-011. Those percentages reflect the rarity. Compare 1981 SBA filled S to clear S. This has really been a difficult hole for me. I just pulled the trigger on a this one.

I don't know that the percentages are exactly, and I have not bothered to get the attribution for the different types. What I do know is that the type 2's have a much smaller population over the type 1's After some quick research, this is what I found out: Mintage figures are: 1981-S Type 1 proof - 3,677,175 - 1981-S Type 2 proof - 4,063,083 Now according to PCGS web site about 10% to 20% were the type 2 varieties. (with the 80-90% being type 1) https://www.PCGS.com/news/differenc...counterparts. Quote: The United States Mint produced 4,063,083 total proof sets in 1981 with no known records on how many were packaged using 1981-S Type 2 proof coins, which are seen across all six denominations made that year - one cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar. However, coin experts agree that somewhere between 10% and 20% of the 1981-S proof coinage exhibits the Type 2 S mint mark, making these Type 2 proofs decidedly scarcer than their Type 1 Filled S counterparts. This quote above can be found on the PCGS web link noted above and is located just under the images.

This it is a type 2. Nice coin.
@ Dear: VV it is a nice photo reference coins site. Not more then this. An photo list with no explanations except what they has from Wexler when in 80's sold his data to CONECA. And also as any site , will be not perfect and has errors. VV has many.
