Looks like damage to the edge and a possible die crack at the "L"...

This is a strange looking one, I'm going to say that the coin took a good glancing hit, breaking away the rim and exposing the zinc core.

I agree with the above, except that I believe there is also a die crack running through the letter L.

Removed plating shows the zinc under the coins surface. Just spenders. The countdown has already started on these coins.

I think he's saying, that the coin being zinc, is going to rot away. Especially now that it is exposed. It's tough to keep them from getting zinc rot, and when they do, it's all over. I personally stay away from zinc coins for this reason. I know there are some good rare errors and varieties with some of the dates, but at least the copper ones will always be around, and there will always be a melt value to them. My feelings on it anyway.
If I misunderstood what you meant Coop, sorry about that, I just recall this conversation we had on here about them 10 years ago.

This is a strike thru actually. That part of the rim that is missing is the piece that's over the L in lIberty either there or not. I've seen strike thrus like this a lot. How it happens not sure during the process but it does happen and the piece of the rim missing gets struck thru on the coin.

Here's one on a 2011 I have the rim knocked off and it was struck thru over the date.

Could this not be a retained rim burr?

huh. didn't think of a rim burr. What is on the field and partially over the 'L' could be the rim burr that got folded back when it entered the striking chamber then struck onto the field.
@Dakotaa247: Can you provide better close up of the entire area in one image (not so close)?
This would also explain the zinc that is showing just inside of the rim.

If it were struck thru a rim burr the area that is gone. Wouldn't be showing zinc at all. Since the rim burr would've happened before the Planchet got the copper plating.
Since we see the zinc from the missing piece of the rim. This I'm guessing that the protorim was already defected in the spot and and knicked. and once feed into the striking chamber the piece got knocked off and struck thru on the coin.
