Working on trying to get truer pictures and trying different light sources. What is the area on the cheek, above the ear and by the "E" of America? Is this caused by some sort of die damage or something on the die? Is it damage downstream from striking in some way. Can't figure what might cause this. Not a valuable coin, but I'm wondering how this affects grade. Thanks

Looks like post-mint damage ( PMD) to me. Unfortunate since otherwise this looks like a nice BU cent.
MS Details, damaged.

Coin is nice high end AU with damage on the cheek and the right field; it may be damage of some other type such as where a pin or attachment was mounted at one point and later removed (e.g. the coin was used as a button or brooch or pin or some other decoration.)

It may not straight grade, but it has a humdinger of a die clash, so that makes it a keeper in my book. AU58 details.

Thanks for the input. I got the coin for $20 mostly because I was so curious about the obverse damage. Frankly I still can't figure a plausible reason for it. If a pin had been attached at some point, I'd think it would have been on the reverse and I can't associate that with the type of damage seen. 3 general areas: cheek, above ear and by the "E." I'm still wondering.

It's a mystery lost to time. I do think you're right, they probably would have pinned it the other way round. It is definitely post-mint damage, but I still think the coin is worth saving.

I found another coin at auction (1866 IHC) that has very similar damage. I can't for the life of me figure what would cause these sharp edged irregular holes in the surface.

Corrosion/porosity.

The early copper-nickel Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents were vulnerable due to poorly mixed alloys, and so were the early bronze issues of the later 1860s, even on high grade coins.

Here is one example from my own on what is otherwise a nice XF 1859 - if you're not looking for it, you might not even see it, and then you realize she has a hole in her neck...

difficult to determine surface originality due to lighting and glare. i'll say AU58. Planchet issues imo as paralyse stated is a likely cause
