As the subject line says, I'm curious about what type of packaging the 1922 Grant commemorative half may have been delivered in. The reason I'm asking is I'm looking at a Grant with star half dollar which has interesting toning but has some small evenly-spaced scalloped areas along the rim of the obverse where the toning is lighter. It's somewhat reminiscent of tab toning, but I've never seen anything like this before.

My other guess would be it it was kept for a long time in some time of holder with small tabs to hold it in place. The reverse of the coin has fairly even light toning.

@hokiefan_82: I'm not aware of any official, original envelopes/mailers/packaging for the 1922 Grant Centenary Half Dollar.

The toning you describe sounds interesting! I would guess it is due to an aftermarket holder.

Please post an image if you acquire the piece.

Thanks, commems! I'd already checked your various topics on the Grant commemoratives and saw you'd never mentioned any packaging so I figured there was none. And, unlike many other commemoratives where tab toning from packaging isn't too unusual, I'd never seen anything like this on a Grant.

I've got a bid in on it already, as I'm often attracted to pieces with a bit unusual toning (as long as it's not too dark). It's a with-star PCGS MS65 example, so we'll see how far I'm willing to go with the bidding! I'll definitely be sharing if I happen to get it.

Thanks again!

Well, I did get it. I'll be quite interested in seeing how the toning looks in-hand. Hopefully I'll receive it late this week and I'll be sharing pics then.

Well, I received the Grant w/ Star today, and I'm very happy. The coin in hand looks nicer than the pics on Great Collections, and while the lighter-toned scalloped pattern along the obverse periphery is still quite clear, it's not as stark looking as in the GC pics. Also, the color of the obverse I think looks more attractive in hand.

I was surprised there was very little interest in this coin; only about 6 people were tracking it, and after I put in the minimum bid there was only a single other bid (at the minimum increment) before bidding closed. So, I ended up getting it for about 10% over Graysheet bid (including the BP), so I'm satisfied with what I paid for it as well.

Again, the pics on GC weren't very complimentary, and I have to admit I had some second thoughts myself. However, I'm quite happy I stayed with it...

Nice coin! Congrats on the pickup!

Going back to your original post...

Though interesting, my eyes don't see the result of being held in place by a tab in a holder. I see variable distances from the rim to the start of the toning across the obverse which suggests to me long-term placement in a coin envelope vs. tabbed holder. Just my opinion, your mileage may vary!

With the coin in-hand now, I think you're probably correct, commems.
