Also please provide a photo of the edge. It may be plated.

A 1970 West German 1-pfennig coin should be magnetic and masw of bronze-clad steel. You should be able to see the steel on the edge, rather like you see the copper on the edge of post-1964 American clad coins.

I think it's likely to have been plated, but it would be interesting to see the edge.

The most logical explanation is that it's a normal 1970G 1 pfennig, that has been plated. It would not have been done in the mint, so it's not a mint error or pattern.

- It's magnetic, so it has a steel core like a regular pfennig (i.e. it's not solid brass).
- You can't see the steel core on the rim, like you can on a regular German coin. This means it's not some kind of "they used the wrong sheet of metal to punch out the blanks" error.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

By 1970 this coin had been in production for 20 years. Patterns may well have been struck in 1949 and 1950 when the Wesr German treasury may have been deciding what form their new currency would take, but it's unlikely they would have suddenly struck a pattern in a different metal in 1970. It was also a very low value coin and it would not have been viable to strike it from a more expensive alloy.

in my collection I have over 100 pieces of 1 pfennig coins from the seventies of the last century and all of them are gold plated, otherwise the Germans used to stick a gold plated 1 pfennig coin in their savings books as a charm that brings money into the house.
