What say you all? Seller's not-great pics. 30 day return policy. What's a fair bid? Common date, but I liked the coin - might be full of it, but that wouldn't be the first time!

i'll say high AU based on the photos however I think there is good chance this was cleaned and would detail. looks like a scratch under GOD and a small dig to right of the 5. I think these photos are hiding more than you are seeing.
just a question...are a lot of these coins you are looking at from the same seller or different ones?

Can you let us know a little more about your budget and collecting goals. Working a set of Shields nickels? A general US type set? I'd call this an AU if was me at the dealers tables in a show. As an AU Shield isn't a terribly hard to find coin, what are you seeing or feeling about this one in particular driving the urgency in your soul? - I collect the year 1882 and have a few Shields from G-XF with interesting die cracks and laminations. I've never made the jump to AU/UNC simply because the stars have never aligned for me, there was usually (always until now I suppose) a more interesting use of $75-300.

A fair question, Collects82. I'm really focusing on IHCs and trying to complete a collection in the XF/AU/MS grades. I can afford to spend up to about $300 for the right coin, but not very often. This coin jumped out at me because I had a very worn example as a kid - long gone. Probably a dumb reason ;>). Panzaldi, these are from a lot of different dealers. I keep a list of ones that seem to photograph coins to purposely hide flaws, and consult that list when looking at photos. Getting to be a LONG list.

Getting to be a LONG list. thats definitely a good idea if you are going to pull the trigger on this one when placing a bid I would consider a price that would take into account that the coin could possibly details. straight graded AU58's are selling for about $100 detail ones between $70-90 if it was me i'd pay the extra few $$ to ensure I had a straight graded coin or one that had a little better eye appeal and I was fairly certain would grade straight since there is not much difference in value

I appreciate the advice. As Clint Eastwood famously said, "A man's got to know his limitations." ;>)

I'm going to buck (nickel?) the trend and put this one at MS62. It's got a remarkably strong strike for a Shield -- look at those stars, fully split, and the shield lines are intact. If it did get into circulation, it couldn't have been there for too long -- a true AU58 "slider" in that case.
I would be hesitant to bid a lot of money on it, though, only because the pictures are blurry, and there's some minor areas of concern I'd want to see better photos of (the area around IGWT, in particular.) Especially photos that better show the surfaces with more natural (indirect) lighting on them to see if it can capture the luster a little better. That might help find out if it's been cleaned or has hidden issues.

I'm pretty lowball on this. Thanks for the comments and advice. If I can get it cheap, I'll take a chance (can always return it).

i was going back and forth between 58 and 62 like paralyse stated. the reason I went with 58 is due to the photos and toning on this one it could go either way. lighting and glare can make a coin appear to have luster so the only way to tell on this coin what the surfaces are really like is to have it in hand for closer inspection
update to my previous comment:
i stated there appeared to be a scratch under GOD. closer inspection it looks more like a die crack as its not crossing devices but again photos can hide a lot

with Coinfrog. It may well be a MS+? coin, but with these pics, it is impossible to give an exact MS grade opinion. An buying opportunity could well be missed, but I don't think so. If the seller wishes to attract more educated bids better pics would be necessary; perhaps? the seller has something to hide. Even if the return policy is honest, it could still turn out to be a minor, but unnecessary hassle.

I saw this one listed and after looking at the seller photos many times decided to pass. Photos are just enough out of focus on the obverse, leads me to believe they are hiding something.
