Hi,

I recently purchased this set of Keeling Cocos Island coins. They are in Krause but are not strictly speaking a currency. The islands are under nominal Australian administration for defence etc..

This tiny island community has just over 500 residents (stangely it has 5 police officers - that's 1 per 100 (I know it's to look after the tourists, but that is still a high ratio) Here, you can never find one when you want one!

The high denominations seem to photograph quite well but the lower denominations are very difficult -- they are very reflective, so I haven;t included them.

Quite a nice set in hand really with reasonably large coins. So many of today's modern sets consist of small fiddly things

I have two of these sets of coin tokens and also the 2003 gold and silver coin tokens commemorating Charles Darwin. I'm not sure who struck any of them but I don't think they are available on the Islands and certainly do not circulate there. It is interesting that they are same size as Australian issues which is one thing that appeals to me.

The only legal currency on the Islands are Australia's legal tender coins.

I picked up a set of these to add to my fish themed collection. They can actually be found in Krause's Unusual World Coins catalog. If you also have the 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent coins then they are given reference numbers X#11-X#17 going lowest demoniation to highest.

Nice coins !
There are 2 versions of the coins which teir pictures are shown above. The 2004 series includes the Malay words "BUKAN WANG TUNAI" , which mean "NOT CASH MONEY". This legend was ommitted in a later version.
4 Coins with the inscription BUKAN WANG TUNAI are mentioned here :
