I was think what is a good age to start out a young person collecting coins. I am think what age should you start your kids, your nefews or nieces, or your grandkids. what do you feel the best age to start them out on this great hobbie. I have somewhat started my son but he is 4 yr old and don't think he care much about coins, but I do have a 8 yr old nefew that I started on the State Quarters. I am not really sure if he like it or not. so what do oyu think the best age to start a new collector or if you were young when you started collection then what age were you. Results

I think 10 to 12 is the best age as I feel that is the age that children can appreciate the value of something.

I started my children very early in life. Long before they even knew what coin collecting, or even coins, were all about. I do have a 4 year old that knows the difference between gold and silver but he is more interested in the design than he is the value. If I were going to start someone else's kids I would think 10 to 12 would be an age that would captivate their imagination.

I've worked with youth in Scouting all my life. With adult supervision, guidance, and good judgement, an intelligent undistracted child can learn surprising detail as early as two years. Psychologists tell us that classification of things is one of the first organized behaviors in children (e.g., right/wrong, up/down, colors, materials, differences, hot/cold).
Catch them when they're young. Two or three years is not too young to introduce children to coins if they are past the stage of putting everything into their mouths or hiding/destroying items. Parents' judgement call.

I started collecting stamps at the age of 7 and coins followed shortly afterwards. So I think a child is capable of understanding at that age and probably younger. Steve

It really depends upon the child. I voted 6-7 because my grandfather got me started when I was 6 and I was very interested. In a lot of ways, I was not a typical 6-year-old though. I was very organized and orderly with an interest in history and attention to detail. All of these qualities went perfectly with coin collecting. Many 6-year-olds do not have these traits yet, so you have to depend upon your gut feeling.

for me, it was eight, but my colletion was just a handfull of wheaties. make sure your kid knows the value of a buck before you give him/her anything other than some interesting, common dote, worn old coins to look at as a "teaser"

About 10 years old, but you could start them younger on the easy stuff like State Quarters or the new nickels.

I have just started and I am 13. I believe a child should be 12+ because they will be more likely to understand to treat a coin delicatly. What I mean is they dont get a proof coin out of the capsule without cotton gloves on. So they wont pull it out of the proof capsule and flip it or play heads or tails and ruin a perfectly good coin. Dont you understand what I am saying?
