I am an avid collector of Encased Cents so when I saw the coin that appears later in this post it immediately got my interest.

First, for context, this coin is a well known 1963 Encased Cent, which I now believe was struck by the Wellings Mint.

I found this on line reference to medals struck in 1963 at the Wellings Mint for the Toronto Coin Club featuring the Toronto Armouries. The medals can be found on ebay from time to time in copper and silver with nice sharp strikes (See images 9 & 10).

Then here is the medal that I have found. I think it was a test strike of the Armouries die made at the Wellings mint using the Lucky Green Stamps die as a mate. It looks like they put a copper plug in the hole meant for the cent which has been absorbed into the brass planchet (not the copper that the final medal was struck in). The strike is weak and off centre, so I am guessing that the planchet was not quite the right size. Hope you like it. A favourite among my Encased Coins!
