I'm doing some research on this coin I found while MDing. Some say it may be counterfeit due to the look. This coin came from a old home place that dated back to the mid 1800's. several " down.
If you notice the date it looks to be off in some way with the third # (18?5)also looks to be plated.
I'm hoping with your experience you can tell me one way or the other. trying to find someone in my area but no luck yet to help with a + ID.

First the basics:

Have you weighed it and checked it for magnetic properties?

If the weight is way off or it sticks to a magnet that will save you a lot of head scratching right off the bat.

On second thought...

That year is wrong. They didn't make those is 1885.

Sorry.

No problem.

Here are the specs:

Diameter: 32-33 millimeters
Weight: 13.48 grams

I'm hoping for the best, but that date bothers me.

being flat on top do you think it's a "8". the "8" in 18 is curved?

Well, that's what it looks like to me.

But they didn't mint those in 1885.

So, it's either a genuine coin with a tampered date (why would someone change the date to one that didn't exist?)

Or it's an error I don't know about (I'm not an expert by any stretch).

OR, it's just a counterfeit.

I'm not just bothered by the date. The wear patterns seem strange and uneven.

I suspect it's probably counterfeit. It (the 3) looks like no known 1835 examples and Star 13 is WAY off.

Neat find though. It's probably worth more as a counterfeit than a genuine Capped Bust Half.

Take Care
