Has anyone purchased one of these from the add in National Geographic? If so do you have a scan? I was wondering how badly worn they typically are. At least they are genuine, I'll buy one for that alone.
I would pass if I were you unless you are buying it for the connection to the El Cazador shipwreck http://www.elcazador.com/ These coins for sale in Nat Geo all look like the low end rejects from the wreck. For the record they have been trying to sell the Cazador coins for at least 15 years. Most of them are in horrible condition. If you want to buy a nice "Spanish Milled Dollar", go to a reputable dealer or a medium sized coin show and look for one. Half the fun is the hunt. Check out the "World Coins and Commemoratives" forum on this site and there are lots of collectors to talk with and lots of posted pictures to view. One member just posted pictures of a nice one he just acquired for $20, much nicer than the ones you are looking at in the magazine.
Nice pillar Prethen, that's a keeper for sure, The coins PersianGuy is referring to are all 1783 Portrait dollars, most of which are so heavily corroded you can't make out any of the fine detail. IMHO he is better off holding out for a nice pillar like yours or a nice portrait dollars like the ones on this forum topic: 8 Reales Carlos III Portrait Dollars posted 12/7/08
Sometimes the condition of the coin is not as important as it's history. But don't pay crazy money for a bad coin just because it has a good history behind it. The El Cazador may have a good history to it, but there are hundreds of thousands of coins from it. So don't get carried away.
