Hello all.

found this coin in the back of my dresser

Walking-Liberty-Half-Dollar----No-Year?

While the coin itself is in decent shape, the date is completely missing and it doesn't really look like it was scratched off. I have another of these 1917 which is very worn but you can still see the "17". Hints?

to the CCF! More than likely, your coin has been tampered with in some form or another. If this was a struck thru grease error, which most missing detail coins are, it would have affected other design elements as well around the date area. Not always, but as a general rule.

, Based on the condition of the coin the date should be readable. I think the date has been removed fo some unknown reason.

OK, thanks all. Why would anyone remove the date from a coin I wonder? And I suppose this renders the coin valueless except for its silver content?

Thanks again.

That is weird, I have a few of those with worn out dates......worn out. Yours looks like it's in too good of condition for a missing date. And no, I would guess it's still worth a bit more than it's silver content, kind of like buffalos right?
I'm not suggesting this, just asking, would he want to try an acid restore date technique thing?

Oh and that's a pretty cool way to find a coin!

I see gouges where the date should be so I would have to say it was removed. Since the coin has been defaced then it would be worth just silver value. Even worn common dates do not have much, if any, value over silver melt. Date restoration does not work well on silver, that is a process that works much better on nickel alloy coins. Also, even if this was a cupronickel coin, the date would not restore since it has been removed, not worn off.

Thanks again to all. And thanks for the welcomes. As you can tell I'm not much of a coin guy. I guess it does it look like the date is gouged, but I just couldn't figure why anyone would do such a thing.

I may have some other coins to ask about, this is a nice forum, thanks again.
