(Thank you, kind admin for reminding me to post them!)

Thanks for popping by! I'm gonna get right to it-

Got this 2000 D Maryland State Quarter as change back and it's missing a lot of the silver at first I thought it was dirty but no, so then I figured wear and tear- but the raised parts of the surface have silver on them? If it was worn away wouldn't the raised bits have worn away way before the shallow parts? So I don't have a scale which I know makes it harder to tell exactly how much it ways but compared to a 2000 Massachusetts P quarter it feels considerably lighter in my opinion.

Any information or critique welcomed! Hope y'all have a blessed day!

Always best to post pics of both sides of a coin. Your coin looks like environmental damage to me,not a mint error.
Weight would help, but I am 98% sure it is ED.

Glad to help @aus and welcome to CCF. Typically, coins with this sort of coloration are victims of having been buried in soil for an extended period of time. As coins with a missing clad layer most often are underwieght, including the weight of this quarter could help us to rule out that possibility. Thx.

Thanks for the speedy replies! Is there a 'like' button haha, I will see if I can't get that weight for you guys here shortly. I was so sure it was ED but but the silver on the higher parts threw me off on it. had to give it a chance tho. maybe next time George

This particular posted coin as others mentioned looks more like environmental damage/toning. There ARE missing clad layer errors on the Maryland 2000 and 2000d quarters so its a good one to search for them. The color is more like this missing clad example below.

In fact I actually had bought a few mint sewn bags of those (one of my bags below I posted before) to search for the missing clad layers and rotated dies among all the other normal potential errors and high quality examples. My housing situation is not yet settled and so I havent yet been able to start much searching of the change and the bags yet.

Agreed, this is just an environmentally toned/damaged coin. You can still see some of the shiny cladding showing through.

As seen in the image that datadragon posted above, a missing clad layer will look more like the color of a copper cent. Most of these are caught when they are uncirculated, so they will be bright red. Those that do circulate will tone brown.

The copper quarter on the right side in my signature image has a missing clad layer.

Agree that your coin is showing staining/toning from environmental exposure.
