I am pretty new to this hobby and just made a very expensive mistake and hopefully someone will read this and save themself from making the same mistake. 1961 Franklin Proof FS-801 Here's the obverse before I placed it in a 2X2  Apparently I ran my finger across the obv as I put it in the 2X2  Here's detail of the reverse just for giggles ...  Guess I just paid a very high tuition fee for this lesson. Don't make this mistake! |

initial research indicates that method is for cleaning but will do nothing for the scratches on the field just below the L in Liberty
or am I missing something?

White cotton gloves and always hold your coins by the rim. Also, never ever rub the coins. Personally, I would keep Proofs in rounds and not 2 x 2's. Yes, you had a "lesson learned". Don't feel too bad...we've all had challenges along the way. We know your pain!  Are you sure those marks are on the coin and not on the 2x2 cover? Edited by dsking

had while cotton gloves on. it's in a 2X2 plastic flip. I removed it from the flip to get the last pic.
lesson learned ... I hope so. what might have been a PR65 or better is probably 'not gradable with proof like details' or similar?
from possibly $3500 to $300 is quite the lesson no one else needs to learn first hand

The the coin is 62 years old, had some milk spots on it before the gloved finger left it's trail.
All things considered I wouldn't be ashamed of it. Lesson learned.
The Numismatic PHD "tuition" can be very expensive. I've been working on mine about 65 years and I'm still struggling! Welcome to the club with a very large membership base in it!

so do I bother submitting the coin for grading or is it just not worth it now?

I would get it slabbed to protect it from further damage. I would also ask for the reverse of the coin to be shown on the label side of the slab instead of the usual obverse. I think it will still straight grade but no higher than 64. My Two Cents. |

Expensive lesson. Even if a glove is clean, it can pick up specs of grit from the coin, then drag them, leaving hairlines behind.

 with what Nick said. Also, I've scratched coins getting them in and out of a coin flip too. You'll still get a good grade on your coin but, maybe not as good as it would have been. That's still a very nice Benny! |

Proof coins are very sensitive to being touched. I scratched one of my proof silver eagles taking it out of capsule to take photos. I usually use latex medical gloves, hold coins on the edge. Anything touching the surface of a proof coin can cause light scratches. I have some cheap coins in 2x2, but prefer round plastic capsules for more valuable coins. That's a cool half dollar!

It looks like you already handled them improperly from your first photo.
Fingerprints are Visible.
I'm not sure how you scratched your Coin so bad with gloves on in the first place.
