I will try to post photos later tonight. Unfortunately this coin has seen better days. However, the A M and the PG are clear enough to leave all question behind. According to the Lincoln Resource this is the rarest of the WAM varieties. This coin looks like it has had glue spilled on it or some sort of plaster. If this could be cleaned off, it would be a much more attactive cent. Its kind of odd, I've searched boxes of pennies for WAMs. The only ones I've found has been in regualer change. This 1996 WAM came out of a "give a penny/take a penny" tray. I was happy to take it, and toss in a dime for my appreciation to the clerk. I'm certain she thought I was crazy.

Very nice! I just finished going through 2 boxes of cents, and only found a 1998 Wide AM. I have yet to find a 1996 in searching through 100K + coins.

We definitely need to see a picture of this one. :-) Something to check is the distance between the M and E of AMERICA. On a Wide AM, the distance between the bottoms of the A and M is the same as the distance between the bottoms of the M and E. On the regular issue with the AM touching, the space between the M and E is larger than the space between the A and M. So when you post a picture, post the AME not just the AM Thanks, Bill

I wonder if this 1996 WAM has a die rotation error also like Bill Crawford's had?. Can't wait to see pics of this one!

I'm waiting for the misses to get home with the camera. In the meantime, that comment about the distance between the A and M being the same as the M and E has me second guessing myself. I would feel pretty silly thinking I had a Wide AM and its not. I'll post the photos in about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I'll let the community decide on this one. There is a huge gap between the M and E, but not as much between the A and M. BTW, no die rotation on this coin. I'll post photos of my two 98 WAMs as well. I could be missing the mark on all of these. Hopefully not though.

Of course, the pictures will help. If the gap between the M and E is larger than the gap between the A and M then the likelihood is that the coin was damaged, the strike was a little weak or as occasionally seen, the die was polished to remove clash marks causing a slight separation between the bases of the A and M.
Still post a picture and we will be able to tell for sure. There is never anything to be feel silly about:-)
Thanks, Bill
