In 1943, due to a shortage of copper being used for the war effort, they made Lincoln cents from a zinc plated steel planchet. This is the only year they were made this way for normal usage. In 1944 they when back to a copper alloy.

Cents were made out of zinc coated steel in 1943 because copper was needed for the war effort. A lot of them were made and are still common today. This one is low grade and very little value, but is still a very interesting piece of history.

sure looks like a steel cent to me

A lot of the history has bee told up above, but many of these get re-plated with a new coating of zinc to make them look like a higher grade.
