Hi Everyone

I recently aquired an almost complete set of lincoln cents. Only coin missing is the 09 S vdb.

The coins where stored in an older book that had plastic sleeves stored in plastic. Since this was older plastic it contains the chemical PVC in it. Needless to say most of the coins have a green rim and weird film like substance covering the coin

I have read on here in several differnt threads that acetone can somtimes be used to remove the green and the film. My question is
Is Acetone safe to be used on all coins? I dont want to damage the coins...exspecially the 1922 NO D

Also how long should each coin be left in the Acetone?

Since I have several coins that need the green removed how often should I change the acteone before putting a differnt coin?

If you dont reccomend acetone that what do you reccomend?

Thanks for the help and suggetions

There are products specifically made to remove PVC residue but I would think Acetone would be fine. I have only used it a couple times and am kind of an amateur when it comes to it's usages. BadThad would be the guy or biochemist. Wait for some of our chemists responses.
To think the 09-S,& 14-D are affected with PVC residue

G'DAY, I've never used Acetone to remove anything from coins.
Judging by numerous previous threads on CCF, it seems that American collectors often use it, without adverse consequences.
I recently had some "cleaning challenges" at home - thankfully, not coin-related. I found that eucalyptus oil can remove some very sticky adhesives, including ones in place for a longish time, AND those which had resisted several previous attempts with alcohol, and other common household solvents.

If I had a "green problem", I think I would give earnest consideration to trying eucalyptus oil.

Hi. I've used acetone on a bu wheat I've found that had a sharpie scribble on it. I would pour it in a glass jar with a wide opening let it soak and swirl occasionally. Do not rub the coin with anything. The acetone should break it down and dissolve from the surface. This worked for me and showed no traces of change on the coin. Probably practice on a common date before jumping to the keys.

highroller - The green is most likely verdigris from exposure to humidity. Can you take some pictures?

Your next step should be soak them INDIVIDUALLY in xylenes. It's a much better solvent for copper than acetone.

I soaked them individually in acetone so I would do that same with Xylenes. Where is a good place to buy xylenes?

I will try to post pictures today or tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice
