PCGS - The U.S. Mint brought back the bison reverse in 2005 with the Jefferson nickel, but it was flawed. This coin features what looks like a speared bison - the result of a die gouge caused by damage to the die during production. In PCGS MS65, this dramatic error is worth around $500, per the PCGS Price Guide. Time to check your change.

Not sure when the price was estimated but TODAY this variety in MS65 carries a higher premium than $500 and it is very sought after.
Millions of 2005 nickels were made at the Philadelphia and Denver mints, with the Denver "D" minting 487,680,000 circulation coins. However, a very small, unknown number of these regular production coins had a die error resulting in the "speared bison" anomaly.

I love the Speared Bison. I've always thought that they're cool. It'd be cool if I found one.

I have searched for that nickel for over two years, but nothing yet. Given the skew towards Philly nickels here, I doubt I will ever cross paths with a speared bison in the wild. But there is always hope. =)

I wonder how the die gouge got down into the cavity of the die.

Nice looking example.

@Marve - I was thinking the same thing. Makes me wonder if this is an 'assisted' error?

maybe a worker 'dropped' another die 'accidently' on to this speared die - the arc of a die may reach into the design.
