Okay, I may have spent too much for this but it's an exceptionally rare coin. Some light damage but this thing is so hard to find above VG that I thought it was worth it. Curious to know what you think.

My first thought ... beautiful despite the grime!

Lots of doubling on the obverse. Prob grade around EF40?

Thanks! I'm pleased with it - not sure that it would straight grade, there might be a details annotation. But I'll reserve judgement until I've got it in hand.

Interestingly, this coin looks better in hand than it does in that photo. A lot of what looks like damage appears to be crud in the lettering and that sort of thing. I'm contemplating cracking it out of it's PCGS holder and soaking it acetone.

Any thoughts out there?

PS, it's graded EF-40 details/damage. This refers to the semi-circular mark. It's not a dent or a bend, likely just the outline of another coin it was sitting against for some part of its history.

The "crud" looks like corrosion to me.

There is definitely some surface damage but, up close at least, it looks like there's less of it than it does in the photos.

I'd crack it out if it were mine. I can't see what the damage is referring to really but the grime is thick!

Make sure you practice a dip with something not valuable before trying to clean this rarity.

Good luck!
