Yes, full, large and sharp images of some examples would help immensely.

Modern coins that have some numismatic value should not be cleaned generally.

Use the search line here on CCF, there are topics about cleaning coins, copper coins, using acetone on silver coins, etc. There's some YouTube videos about cleaning coins but be careful, learn about it first, experiment with just face value coins with no numismatic value.

Saying "never clean coins" does not apply to all circumstances. Ancient coins are usually cleaned. Modern coins found in the ground often need to be cleaned of their encrustation, dirt, etc. Modern coins with problems can be conserved/restored. Inexpensive circulated coins can be cleaned to improve appearance and just for fun IMO.

I do not think the OP has a particular coin in mind and is just asking a general question to which I would answer:

Follow the solvent polarity ladder: http://goccf.com/t/57008#447106

a soak in hardware store grade pure acetone will remove some gunk, anything it doesn't is better left on the coin

to the CCF!

That's a touchy subject among coin collectors. It's not advisable to clean coins as most numismatist want original surfaces when they buy rare coins. You really don't want to clean ANY coin, because today's spare change can become collectable some day in the future.

Cleaning can reduce the value of a collectable coin by 80% or more, depending on the damage done to the surfaces.

Here's a cartoon I like to show when this question comes up.

In general, collectable coins should never been cleaned.

Sounds like they're probably covered in verdigris. Are they covered with "green stuff"? What are the date ranges on the coins?
