Hello, I have a coin that looks suspiciously like a King George III half penny, but there is no text other than the 1820 date, which makes me suspect that it is a token not a coin. I've seen King George IV tokens like this online but not a King George III one. Does anyone have more information?

Yes, it's a token. Usually classed as "Canadian", as they seem to have been sent there, though they were probably made in England. Here's a similar example from Heritage, though I'm not familiar enough with the series to attribute the variety.

You'll notice that the coin linked above is graded "AU-53", despite it looking like it's heavily worn. That's because these tokens were manufactured to look already worn and scuffed up, in an effort to convince people that they'd been in circulation for a while. They are a class of token known in Britain as "evasive"; with no maker or issuer, these tokens were not issued by a reputable business, but rather, by a conman attempting to make a profit by selling lightweight tokens for full-weight price. They are borderline counterfeits, attempting to mimic official coins but not actually stating such a claim on the tokens. They would have been made some time after 1820; the "1820" date is part of the lie, to try to convince the unsuspecting user that the token was older than it actually was.

Great call Sap! I was thinking it's not English as I've been deep into reading and studying British tokens lately. It is for sure George III however I just couldn't find it in any of my reference books. After seeing the Heritage one, I'd say this one is at least half as nice. still a very valuable piece.
