The Hat may be an add on. I understand that soldiers in the trenches of WWI amused themselves by adding to the designs of some coins. Some of these were quite well done. Welcome to the Forum Scoutjim99.

thank for the reply, I will try to add a picture I think my scanner is not working but when I get my digital battery charged I will take a photo. any thing is possible I have a 16X loup and I cant see any where, that it was tampered or added on, and if it was they are real good because the apperance of the hat is undercut like a fine sculpter woul do. But that also makes me ask the ? how did they get the die to do that

I always turn the flash off and just use a lamp with my camera in the "macro" setting

Hi,
It looks like a fake to me. No kings portrait had a hat on?
Km #527 is a German state (prussia) three mark.
But I am going with it being a fake. Or maybe even a medallion of some sort?

I looked in my standard catalog german coins 1601 -present and just about every other book I have . I guess I kind of new it but was just hoping. Thanks

Yep, I'd go with toast's "trench art" theory. Bored soldiers (or POWs) did some amazing stuff with coins during the war.

The artwork looks a little to good to be true?

Tokensa1 has a few Boer War period trench-art ZAR coins on his website. These are on a similar theme as this German coin (putting President Kruger in a silly hat, etc.), but much less skilfully done.
