So I have this 1945 Steel Plated Penny that sticks to a magnet no problem. From what I can see and read it most likely was some high school experiment perhaps. Any idea if this coin origin is worth exploring?

Looks like the plating is wearing off.

Definitely has been plated. It's now starting to wear off as you can see.

Thank you . I didn't think anything like that would come from, a mint but obviously I am very green when it comes to these things.

How does one even go about plating a copper cent with a steel top layer?

That was my question, too, Dearborn. I was wondering if this copper cent was actually electroplated with nickel. It would still be attracted to a magnet in that case, and would be easier to do than trying to somehow plate the coin with steel.

Yes Silvio you can, but that was not my question.

I have not seen anyone plate another metal with steel, nor would I see a reason to, unless you want it to rust...

Correct about rust. Me I state that it is possible, and it is.

Now the magnetic question is very simply to answer. : Could be non-magnetic steel. Ex: as Canada used and US mint has this in the congress approved Bill but wait the presidential signature.
