Back around the early '80s, when I was still heavily into coin collecting, I recall seeing some book about world coins in a bookstore. One thing that fascinated me and stuck in my mind was a picture of some large, thick old coin with large, fancy edge lettering. To the best of my recollection it looked like it was made of copper/bronze, and think it was Russian.

Does anyone know of any coins that would fit this basic description?

Some 18th century Russian coppers had edge lettering, like this 2 kopeck coin: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces21305.html

How large and thick?

If you mean very large and very thick, your book might have had pics of the pattern Sestroretsk ruble, a copper puck three inches across and an inch thick with extremely fancy edge lettering that is famously said to be the largest Russian coin ever.

The book you are referring to probably is: The Beauty and Lore of Coins, Currency and Medals by Clain-Stefanelli, Elvira Clain-Stefanelli, Vladimir. Published by Riverwood Publishers Ltd; 1st edition (1974)
ISBN 10: 091476201X ISBN 13: 9780914762010

A sestoretsk ruble is illustrated in fig 171 on page 138

...though the pattern plate ruble was heavier.

It's also said to be the largest (heaviest) round bronze coin ever issued, though if so it's beaten by the large-size decussis, and IIRC by one or two others.

Here is an image of the front cover of that book mentioned by @eli:

Wow, you guys are good.

It's been many years, and I have a poor visual memory, so it's hard for me to say for sure. But I think you may be right about the Sestoretsk ruble and the specific book. I wasn't picturing a coin quite so thick in relation to its width, but that may be a matter of the angle of the photograph in the book and/or my faulty memory.
