There are surprisingly quite a number of error Australian 5 cents struck on Australian 1 cent copper coin. I've seen a couple at coin shows.

There was an auction recently that sold all kinds of wild error coins. This was described as struck on unidentified foreign coin and magnetic. Now this is interesting. It looks like copper but has some strange underlying feature. Overstruck coins are my my field of interest so I had to figure out what the original host coin is.

The first thing that got my attention is the echidna with some strange saw like structure. I decided to play around in photoshop and rotated it until it made some sense. By sheer luck of coincidence, I was sorting out some coins and remembered seeing something similar.

I am 99% certain that the host coin is a Singapore 1978 or 1979 1 cent coin. This is a copper clad steel coin which is magnetic and matches the weight.

Pretty interesting to see such mint sport coin. I don't know how the original coin got into the mint and came out the way it did...

Couple of photos with a cheap USB microscope. I'm 99% certain it's 1978. So did a rogue employee struck such coin and smuggled it out?

Very cool! Whether it's mint assisted or not, still a nice error coin.
