For the past couple years I've been participating in them. The 20% fee is steep and there are few bargains, but the coins that are offered are impressive and not often seen. For instance, there is a large group of French/German/Dutch crown-sized coins from the 1500-1800 period in the current auction. I have seen similar large groups of Mysian staters and Achaemenid darics offered in past auctions. Almost every auction features a large group of Athens tetradrachms, though the prices have dampened my interest. "Two minutes ago I would have sold my chances for a tired dime." Fred Astaire

Thank you, thq. I looked at some of their auctions and as you said they have high-quality coins. Since this is not an area I collect, I can't comment on the prices. However, I would like to acquire a coin from ancient Gaul, the land of my ancestors, and CNG seems to be an excellent resource.

Have a look at Vcoins ancients prices. However, although Numiscorner has lots of rare and interesting pieces. their prices seem to me to be a bit over the top, compared with competing dealers. Compare those prices against your proposed current auction bid +20%, then compare your proposed bid price against Coinarchives realized prices.
After doing this sort pf price research, you may consider yourself to be in a reasonable place to go ahead and submit a bid on a coin you may take your interest in a current auction.
Note: I always like to go to pre auction view days, before placing a single price written bid. That is not possible if the auction is not in your home city, in which case, you have to rely on good quality photos and accurate lot descriptions, catalog references, and verifiable provenances, with the auctioneer having the highest of World reputations.
Fortunately I also have some access to electron microscopy and attached XRF analysis, for post purchase verification. Access to research papers for metal analysis for ancient coins is necessary for research support for this sort of investigation.

What caught my attention are the several Low Countries pieces over the transition from Spanish to early independence. It's an excellent offering.

I always look over the CNG auctions for the medieval and early modern themes in my collection. I like buying from them because delivery is more efficient (both cheaper and faster) than buying from European auction houses.
Of the half dozens coins I bought in the last year, three came in below what I expected, and three were more competitive.
I think for big silver (if you are looking at silver riders, leeuwendaalders and such) there will always be competition. But sometimes you get lucky.

It'll be interesting to watch tdziemia. Based on recent auctions I don't expect to see any bargains. I might chase a couple of them. I don't have any of the Spanish or Burgundian pieces.

In my opinion, the one Burgundian piece should go below the estimate. These can often be found on VCoins and MA-Shops, too.
With so many leeuwendaalders selling at the same time, you might get lucky and find a bargain, though I expect the nicer ones will get some interest.

I didn't win any leeuwendaalders, but picked up the Burgundian stuiver, a Spanish rijksdaalder and a few patagons. Nothing over $100.
Looking over the coins on Numista, the 1568 Philip II rijksdaalder is not pretty, but it is pretty rare.

Well done!
Yes, those Burgundian "kruisrijksdaalders" were only issued a few years, so you don't see them often. Nabbing one for under $100 is an accomplishment. I've been picking up patagons at auctions in Poland. I've already got one from Albert & Isabella's reign, and a few from Philip's, and would like to get one from Charles II, but have gotten outbid a couple of times recently.

One of the patagons I won is a Charles II. Patagons appear to be the Spanish Netherlands monetary equivalent of a leeuwendaalder.
My old source for Netherlands pieces was Rondomons, but he was quite a bit more expensive even considering the 20% fee. As the auction progressed there was very little sniping, and I was surprised at how many of my bids held up. This was not the case in CNG's previous auction for a group of zecchinos. I really wanted the 1767 rijksdaalder and the Zeeland leeuwendaalder but those two took off.

The coins arrived yesterday. I had forgotten how big they are and the package was heavy. They came with the previous dealer prices and descriptions still in the flips, marked at $200-400 each. The stuiver is the only one I feel I overpaid for, but not outrageously and it's nice to have an example.
