I like to value my coin collection each year using the Red and Blue Books. However, I noticed this year that the Red Book value of several of my oldest large cents is way higher than the NumisMedia website and a couple more. What would be the reason for this?

prices of coins fluctuate all year. Red Book is only updated one year so whatever the price was at that time thats what is published. this is the biggest reason I dont use it for pricing.

for retail slabbed coins i'll use PCGS. for raw coins I use numismedia.
for buy prices (since I dont get greysheet) i'll use the auction prices on PCGS and sold prices on ebay. these all get you into the ballpark for value. cant just use one source

I have a 2018 Red Book that I use for reference and ballpark prices. In 2018 all the prices in the book were high retail and not much use but with inflation the pricing falls inline with today's market. If you want accurate prices, the best is to use ebay sold and current realized auction prices at GC, Heritage and Stacks.
