Ok, so we've got a decent handle on this LWC variety. So what's the grade on this coin?

A very red penny and a very brown penny for RD/RB/BN determination.

VF35 and the obverse scratch just might garner it a "details" designation, too!

I say VF30/35 details due to the obverse scratches. Color is definitely BN as I see no evidence of any remaining red surfaces.

Yeah, I had wondered if that scratch was enough to kick it into Details grade. A pity, as a 1944-D LWC FS-101 in VG30-35 would be worth something. Maybe only a burrito at Wawa, but then again, Wawa burritos are delicious. =)

Thanks for the help, guys!

I had made my guess at VF30 using PCGS Photograde, so at least my grading skills are improving. In order to extract the knowledge value: where is the approximate cut line for Details due to damage? If the scratch were smaller, for example, would that pass? If this knowledge exists somewhere already (almost a certainty), I will happily read articles or watch videos.

these scratches are deep and in the key area of the coin. I dont think there is a definitive cut line. one thing for certain...if the scratch displaces metal its going to considered damaged and this one does
