That's really cool. Can you tell which State. Or do you have in hand yet.

Thank you RobO411! I'll let you know, when I get it in hand. I think it's just a waffled quarter planchet.

I had no idea the Mint was waffling coins prior to 2003.

Oh yes, they waffled from a long long time. Was many form of cancel. In 2008 I think I hesitate to buy an canceled St-Gaulden at 1200 $ in the first day of a show. Next day gone and last year was sold 10K.

I wonder why the mint would waffle a planchet - it held no monetary value yet.

I found an image of what I believe is the 'Mint Waffler' on line. I'm not sure, but I figure that it works with this top drum and a matching drum below. It looks as if the coins and planchets are fed into the press on a conveyor. I sure hope that they have a safety guard that covers that pinch point! CRUNCH

Yes to day are three wafflers. First it is automatic after blanking. If the blanc pass trough the hole automatic go on cancel drum. Second it is after Milling and the Third it is after strike. On strike it is the only human intervention. If one or two maybe more coins do not pass the inspector of quality test open the gate and all the batch of 2000 coins go in waffler.

Excellent, Yokozuna! Definitely machinery to avoid. I didn't realize how available waffled coins / planchets were until I did an ebay search for "waffle" in Errors. Unfortunately there are quite a few that seem to be "manufactured" by the seller.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
