Why add the waffle process, most mints of the world just send their security to witness the recycle stuff going into the furnace.

I think the whole idea behind waffling coins is so the Mint doesn't have to pay for security.

I was surprised to see how prevalent waffled coins are on ebay. Fake waffles, too.

Me too. Although, you gotta watch out for the fake waffled ones.

This is the result when you do not send security, someone at the recycle plant just chuck them on ebay

According to the 2023 Red Book, p. 442:
