I'm looking at buying a decent guidebook for large cents. The ones I'm coming up with that cover varieties are pretty spendy and usually only have 10 yrs or so... any thoughts on a good starter place or recommendations?

I'm not exactly sure of what level of book you are seeking: If you are seeking a solid introduction to t he series with a year-by-year look at the coins, Whitman's Guuide Book of Half Cents and Large Cents might fit the bill. If you're looking for a "serious" reference on known varieties, the following would be worth checking out: - https://largecents.net/books/bookindex.htmlI agree with Dutch-Tigger, sometimes you need to pay the going rate for a thorough reference book. When you consider all of the time and effort an author puts into such books, the price asked is more than reasonable.

Whitmans guide is a decent all around book as mentioned. These are my go-to's. Primarily the EAC grading, The Cent, and Die Varieties of 1840-57, though the later two are for attribution purposes. Recently updated to the 2021 edition of Grellmans which is great, and you can typically get them "cheaper" than an older edition.

I have some basic info books. Was definitely looking for something that has the more in depth info on varieties. My large cents collection seems to keep growing somehow.. so I need to up my library. But for the cost of some of these I figured I better ask for recommendations

I have a very large and extensive numismatic library and can attest to the really good references books on early coppers are expensive, the top one probably being the Noyes set (multi-volumes), there are some good ones as mentioned above that are available for free in .PDF format or online viewing, through the NBS and PCGS: John Wright's The Cent Book is one of the best middle date books to this day: https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/booksbyauthor/2067Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early Large Cents edited by my friend Mark Borckardt: https://www.PCGS.com/books/earlycentsJohn Grellman's Late Date Cent books here: https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/booksbyauthor/873For Half Cents Roger Cohen's Little Sisters Books: https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/booksbyauthor/481That should get you started, the PCGS and NBS sites both have many more titles than those, also don't forget the periodicals like Penny Wise, from the EAC, also on the NBS, and many of the older auction catalogs, for example the Heritage Husak collection (Sale #460) in Long Beach February, 2008, the 4 part Dan Holmes catalogs from Goldberg Auctions, there are so many more it would be hard to list, but those two collections had most every variety and wonderful write ups making them as valuable as a book.
