Regardless, gros, that was a nice catch, good eye! Whatever the RPM may be, listed or new, it's an early stage flying D.

It is clearly a damaged punch, which is common for that date. Also a minor rotated RPM, also something very common for the date. I have pretty much given up trying to attribute those as there are many and after 10 minutes trying I often find the coin doesn't match anything listed. Frustrating, but it isn't 009 as the mm position is wrong but could be 024 as that looks pretty close. As for the possible S. Well, as noted there are a number of die chips and cracks known from around the mm and extending to the date, some of which make nice curves like seen on this coin. So likely it is just that, a minor RPM on a damaged punch with a die crack issue. But from the photos it does look remarkably like the top of an S. If you really wish to send one somewhere, send the one with the clearest mint mark to Dan Griffin, the RPM attributor for the Wexler site. His contact info is on the site and instructions for how to submit as well. He is the authority, so no point going elsewhere.

I agree with TB about sending to Dan Griffin for a attribution but also a sample to Ray (rmpsrpms), to get some very clear shots and possible 3D imagery. It is hard to beat the subtle nuances in his 3D "eye candy". His imagery will probably be of help to determine an attribution.

If Dan feels it is useful, he will send the coin to Ray, but since there is more than one example available I suppose both could be done at the same time.

I was curious but not that super interested in finding out. Being fairly new to this stuff it's probably something with the die. The more I stare at it the more I seem to make out the shape of the upper part of an S LOL. If the more experienced members truly think it's something the check out. Tell me and I will pursue it.

There are so many 52d rpms that aren't listed. Alot of them look the same with just a little something different. The damaged punch, die indents around the mm, flat top and more. Coopercoins has 75 listed. I'm sitting here with 4 rolls of unc rpms that I still can't id. Maybe some day I'll through them for the 10th time.
