According to Orders in Council, the two upcoming circulating commemoratives will be:

- a one dollar coin celebrating Elsie MacGill (a coloured and a non-coloured version)

- a two dollar coin celebrating Jean Paul Riobelle (a coloured and a non-coloured version)

Celebrating who?
I guarantee that more than 95% of Canadians have never heard of either one.
The future of Canadian coin collecting is quickly following the path already taken by the stamp hobby.
Too much supply, not enough demand.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

I look forward to the coloured version of Riopelle. for those not familiar with his work, worth a quick google. Could be a really interesting one!

I guess the Mint is trying to bring lesser known Canadians (I never heard of them) to the forefront. I'd rather they issue fewer circulating commem's and for events rather than people.

I agree that that seems to be their strategy. I had heard of Elsie MacGill, but that's probably only due to the fact that I'm a history teacher and we discuss her briefly as "Queen of the Hurricanes" when we look at Canada's aviation contribution to the Allied war effort in WW2. That being said, I am not even actually sure why they are commemorating her this year - she wasn't born or died on any significant anniversary this year - the closest I get is that this is 100 years since she was admitted into UofT's engineering classes, which seems like a bit of a random event to commemorate (seems like they are reaching a bit to find any lesser-known Canadian they can).
I would also agree with you that I would probably like to see more events commemorated.

I am trying to figure out what would be on the Riopelle coin. The Act refers to Panel 29. I guess it is the one with a white bird in a circle (4th from the right on the 3rd bolt of canvas).
At least that one looks feasible to engrave on the non-colored version of the coin.
