I like this coin, except for the spotting on the reverse that's hard to evaluate due to seller's small pics. I think it makes EF45, but don't know if the spots (whatever they are) detail it (probably they do). I'm thinking I might go for it if I can get it for the right price - fairly common date, but I've got a soft spot for civil war coins. Comments and grade? Edited by Blastenpene4 07/09/2023 08:06 am

the sharpness of the coin to me looks more like a VF35 and appears to be cleaned so VF35 details (cleaned)

I'm still thinking 40 at least because of the "we" being fairly clear and all the horizontal and vertical shield lines being intact. How do you see cleaning? Not necessarily disputing, but looking for the indicators you're seeing.

Either way, that gunk on the reverse might detail; it.

In my opinion - Areas around gunk on reverse has slight wear marks indicating gunk was cleaned or scraped off there. Also on coin obverse - right hand edge (3 o'clock) has an area that might have light cleaning.

Second most common coin in the Two Cent series (first being the 1864 LM and then this one (a fancy 5) followed by the plain 5 1865), and it's a solid EF/XF in my opinion. The gunk or dark areas on the reverse will not likely come off, if it's a fair price nothing wrong with getting it, but if it's for a type collection and your only Two Cent coin I'd keep looking there are much nicer ones out there that can be had for a similar price I'd bet. I don't think it's been cleaned either, some acetone is worth trying on it, if you get it, but I bet that isn't taking the dark spots away.

regarding cleaning. my first though was the dark area at K3 obv and around the 2 looks like something was used to remove more of what was on there and now you see the residual of that cleaning. also the area right around the 2 seems lighter than the rest of the coin. it may not have been heavily cleaned but theres a good chance it would not grade straight
