I originally thought it was a run of the mill die chip. The shape is close to square. After close inspection the northwest portion of the "chip" is different in color a silver or nickel and looks to be an embedded object. The north portion of the object looks to be resting across the rail of the memorial and not a break from the device. Could it be a chip retained on the die from another coin? Embedded object is odd and something I've only seen photos of. Any thoughts on how I can confirm this is an embedded object? Thanks. "We are all flawed, some MD and some PMD." NYI

Maybe it's some kind of Struck Through error?

It looks like a die chip to me. The fact that it stands above the surrounding surface means that it had to have been a void in the die. Something on the surface would have been pushed into the surface leaving a incuse depression in the coin, or if retained, flatten to the same height as the surrounding surface.

Thank you Yokozuna. Makes sense. The different color is throwing me.

@nyi, if you happen to have easy access to a local university that offers STEM degrees, you might try to cozy up to the materials engineering department to get access to a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Many of these have an attachment that permits non-destructive determination of elements using Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy. You could compare the elemental analysis of this square chunk to the surrounding material and if they come up different well then you've got yourself a cent with something foreign embedded in it. Or maybe that is a whole lot of work for not much return...I'm not sure.

Spence, it does seem like a lot of work for one coin...... However, developing a resource like that would prove very valuable in the long run. Thanks for the idea!

Quote: E&V, Is your avatar a struck through foil? NY Islander, it was struck through zinc. Mike Diamond said that it might have been leftover zinc from another error coin that got struck through on mine. I can give you the link to that thread if you want.

It would appear that this is a die chip to me.
