Just found a beautiful 1995 D Lincoln Cent. Not sure what he black mark it, but scared to try and clean it off. Other than that, looking at the beard and hair with a loop shows no wear at all. The back shows the full stairs, and even Lincoln in his memorial building. What your opinion?

Dang, welp, no worse off than I was. If I found a coin like that without the zinc spot, would it qualify as something nice?

Obverse appears to show a hint of die deterioration--given the posted pics.

@ijn1944: Is that the fuzzy looking background on the obverse?

Nice find! Looks to have seen some circulation, AU-55. The black spot appears to be cupric oxide, the terminal stage of copper corrosion. It cannot be removed without damaging the coin.

Teach yourself how to look for the evidence of light circulation rub. It's best done with an 8x loupe when you hold the coin in a bright light and tilt it back and forth.

The locations where it appear will not be random - they are the points of highest relief in the design. Learn where those high relief points are for each denomination you are interested in.

I can tell by your photo there is a a break in the luster (circulation rub) on Lincoln cheek and forehead above the eye. That makes this an AU-something coin as BadThad points out.

Too bad about that cupric oxide - it is irreversible damage.
