This is a vending machine bucket of coins left untouched since the 90's. Most coins are dusty, corroded, oxidized, etc. What would be the best way to clean them up to look at them for errors without damaging them? Or would it be better to go through what I can and see if errors are found or a rare coin in the bunch then decide if and how to clean them from there? Some of them are unscathed on one side and in good condition but the other side is not.

Thank you,

Shuddle10

If you find a coin with value, use 100% pure Acetone and Verdi-Care. Look through them first.

yep, first a sort by type, then sort by date, then sort by MM, then search each one for varieties, DD's, and RPM's Keep the best, toss the rest.

Were it me, I would dump them into a bucket of soapy water then rinse. Check for either silver or wheaties, then spend the rest. They're pretty much trashed from their environment.

I agree—with ease in such tough shape, I'm not sure saving anything else is worth it. On the other hand, it could be good practice for you if that is what you want.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice.

I've gone through about 50 of the cents in the bucket and am super excited to find this one. Sitting Lincoln on the reverse is not where it should be as far as I can see in the corroded original position. It seems that he is three columns to the right and also titled.

I'm optimistic that it is a great great find if it can be restored and is rare. Any opinions?

Thank you,

Shuddle10

Lincoln is sitting where he should be, just obscured by the corrosion. The other "Lincoln" appears to be a zinc bubble. Give him a poke with a toothpick and see what happens.
