Saw this coin and liked it. Comments and grade? Seems pretty solid EF45 to me. A few minor rim bumps and small scratches by star 10.. Edited by Blastenpene4 07/19/2023 9:46 pm

Solid EF-45 sharpness, rim issues detract.

First off, those are excellent photos, Blastenpene4! Grading: Obverse dies were heavily polished at the time of striking but that does not detract from grade. Wear to high points of hair and coronet, especially LIBERTY. Scratches to right of bun. Multiple rim dings and slight chatter to the fields. Reverse: Slight wear to high points of leaves and ribbon, some chatter to fields. Ding on denticles at 6K, plus a few to rim. Overall: Solid EF45. A very attractive coin.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Not my photos, Hondo, so I can't take credit. Seller's pics. Mulling this one over since I have a limited budget. Got two other coins I'm considering and must choose one of the three. Thanks for your detailed comments.

w/Hondo Boguss comments. i think the biggest issue that stands out is the chin hit. key area. probably would not details the coin but would affect value for me. the other area up for debate is what looks like a pretty good hit to the mouth. at AU (based on these photos) it appears that we are not looking at the original skin. i'll hold back on calling that one as photos and lighting can be deceiving as for grade XF45 and I think its pretty darn close to AU50 with a nicely struck lower curl

I looked at several of these and the mouth was odd on them all. Think they may have been struck that way.

Here's an 1856 Slabbed Uncirculated. Liberty very muddy looking and the mouth has that odd indent.

Half Cents are all pretty rare, supposedly there are less Half Cents combined, than all the saved 1909-S vdb Lincoln cents out in the wild and slabs. I really hate rim issues the first coin while nice I would pass if it was the only Half Cent I was getting for a type set, I really like that last one posted, nice little lamination or strike through on the obverse @ 5K. Here is Roger Cohen's take on the 1856 from his book "American Half Cents: the Little Sisters" page 109: Only one single die pair - variety for that year.

Quote: I looked at several of these and the mouth was odd on them all. Think they may have been struck that way. i can see what you mean. I think your coin is even more pronounced. it appears to be deeper and closer to the corner of the nose Quote:supposedly there are less Half Cents combined, than all the saved 1909-S vdb Lincoln cents out in the wild and slabs. had no idea westcoin. I'm kind of shocked about this. thanks for including this. looking closer at the surfaces, I dont think the hairlines I'm seeing on the fields are die polish lines.

If you're looking for a type coin for your 7070, this is a a nice, and probably affordable in the condition, example.

Sold before I could pull the trigger. I like these coins and will eventually find one for my collection. I'm learning to be patient.
