Hello,
This is from my father's/grandfather's estate. Would it be worth it to get this coin graded? Red Book says 24k were minted, so not too uncommon. The coin appears to be in a very good mint state with lots of luster. The biggest flaws I see are some light scratches on the cheek that show at certain angles. You can see them in the first photo.
I'm just wondering if this coin has the potential to be worth the expense of professional grading?
Thanks in advance.
Tom

After enlarging the first obverse pic, I'd say pass on grading it.

Tombstone1,
Your photos are "great" what did you use to take the pics? It is best though to remove coins from holders before taking pics whenever possible.

It depends on what you are going to do with the coin. If you are going to sell, then grading would be an option to maximize value as the coin looks MS. If you are not going to sell your grandfathers coin, do not waste your money on grading.

Thanks for everyone's input. I am not selling it, but was inquiring if a professional grading would increase its value over what the grading fee would be. Based on your opinions, I'll leave it as-is. Back in the junk Gold drawer it goes......
John, I took the photos with my cell phone. Nothing fancy, just my hand-me-down Iphone-5 I got from by daughter years ago. I didn't want to take it out of the holder for some reason.... I guess I figured my father and grandfather left it in there for probably over 50 years, so how dare I remove it !!!
Thanks again,
Tom

Very uncommon to find gold liberties like that without significant scratches & dings. It's a keeper.

Luster is apparent...couple of ticks in the open fields.
I like her!
MS-63 with a good shot at 64
I would be tempted to send her in just to have her graded, authenticated and protected in a holder.

I would get the coin slabbed and graded. The cost would be minimal compared to what it would accomplish. Your coin will receive the protection it needs rather than being thrown back in the junk draw, the coin would be authenticated and it will receive a grade so you can narrow in on the value. Great photographs . Regardless if you get the coin graded or not I would remove the coin from the 2 x 2 and put it in a plastic slab of some sort for maximum protection.

she looks to be at least MS63 maybe 64 so you're looking at an $800-1300 coin. even if they call it AU58 its still in the $600-650 range. its a nice looking coin and probably did not see hardly any circulation before being pulled. just to preserve the coin from any damage from banging against other coins I would consider slabbing it and I typically dont suggest that.

looking at PCGS you need an entry level subscription of I think $39 plus a $40 grading fee for gold plus shipping and insurance both ways you can see why it doesn't pay unless you have a rare coin or fairly expensive one. the other option would be to purchase a lucite holder or what is called an airtight holder to protect. leaving it the 2x2 is not recommended
