This is my first time looking into this sort of error. I found this coin roll hunting and I've included its dimensions below.

Weight: 2.17 grams
Diameter: 17.76 mm
Thickness: 1.16 mm

There is no shiny nickel appearance anywhere and the edge does not show a bi-metal color like a normal dime. Thoughts?

to the CCF!

It looks like Post Mint Damage. PMD The coin may have been in a fire. The core of clad coinage is copper. As such, it would look more like a cent in color. Bright Red, if the coin is uncirculated or Red Brown to Brown, if the coin has been repeatedly exposed to the environment.

Missing clad is almost always found only on one side of the coin. A missing clad layer would also result in the coin being under weight and possibly show signs of being a weak strike, because of the missing metal.

What might explain the thickness/diameter difference compared to the mints specs? A planchet problem maybe?

@walt, it looks to me like you got a measurement of 17.8 mm whereas the mint spec goal is 17.9 mm. I'd say that the slight difference could be normal variation plus a bit of circulation wear.

Make sense. I found a different site for the specs. The thickness is the most off number. Perhaps Dearborn is right about an acidic environment. Where might I find mint acceptable tolerance?
