I am interested in buying a few rolls of bank / Loomis sealed half dollars and it got me thinking, do these sellers weigh the rolls and only sell the ones they suspect don't have any silver? They're advertised as unsearched, which I'm sure they are but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on a few rolls because my gut tells me that they're only selling the lighter rolls. I know weight will vary from roll to roll but it is possible to know if a roll likely contains silver by its weight?

Does anyone have experience with this? Would it be inappropriate to message a seller and ask if they're weighed? I don't even know if I'd get an honest answer to be honest.

Thanks.

Go to your local bank and see what they have, I wouldn't trust anything on ebay. You are also not going to be paying a premium above face for them at the bank, on ebay you probably would.

The sad thing is I've checked my bank branches multiple times and also a few other banks in my area and if I'm lucky enough to find rolls they've always been customer wrapped which normally wouldn't be an issue however there is at least 1 or 2 other bank roll hunters in my area so I always get their returned rolls. I may end up having to order an entire box which would be fun too.

Don't trust any of those guys on ebay.

Without a doubt searched, a lot of times placing good enders on both sides to garner attention/higher bids.

Thank you for the replies. The rolls I am looking at are Loomis / bank rolled but my guy tells me the rolls have been weighed and they're selling the light ones. I don't trust the other "unsearched" roll sellers that sell the garbage rolls with an Indian head ender. I got burned doing that before.

legitness, this sounds like a high risk / low reward situation. Also you would have to pay for shipping, which would subtract from the value of any finds.
Also, there are devices used to "recrimp" bank rolls.
As a final note, consider this roll - I see these up for auction quite frequently. How does the seller know that it's a Wheat cent roll if there is a token at one end and a Flying Eagle cent at the other?

A dealer I know, when these are sold, says: "these rolls have not been searched-by me". That is all you can be sure of.
