Guys I know I did a post about this coin but I think I did not show good images at that time and I was left with the doubt of what it this, is this a kind of pre-cup? Or is just a die crack with a nice Die chip? This coin just comes to my mind as we have been talking about it.

Here is the New images with different angles and color:

Nice die chip with a short almost rim to rim die crack. (It doesn't appear to reach the rim 'YET' by the O in Dollar. - so a possible pre-cud or maybe a 'Pre' Pre-cud.

Gigi, that die break has all of the potential for becoming a Cud. I don't know if the die was allowed to deteriorate to that extent, or whether it did and the Cuds were caught by Mint employees before release.

From 1999 with the new presses the Die check is done by the computer. At the end of the line after strike from 2000 coins, the inspector will look few coins with 10x magnifier. Is see some Die Crack will not push the recycling button, so the coins will be release. Only the a logarithm will say when the Die must be change. And this in the case of Business coins. The proof are different so different specs.

Just to be clear, a coin cannot really be a pre Cud unless there is a known Cud that matches the so called pre Cud. This coin, the die crack does not go rim to rim so not a pre Cud per say.

I wasn't aware of this requirement. Is this requirement spelled out on Cuds-on-coins?

First time I'm reading this too - I've been to CoC and it is not described there.

I don't know if it is on COC, but it is common sense.

As stated earlier, it is possible that the damaged die was noticed and replaced.

@John1, from one point of view make sense but in fact is not. Here the definition of an pre-cud:

Quote:
A "Pre Cud" is a precursor to most collectible of all die break errors called a Cud. The Pre Cud starts out as a Rim to Rim Die Crack. When the die break starts to show lateral spread and horizontal offset it now becomes a Retained Cud. If the break separates from the die the result is a fully-fledged Cud.

Then what on those modern presses will be never pre-cud? Think that if in this case the Anvil was come to point to be change they at Mint change also the Hammer. Today the Dies go by pairs and if one is out of parameters, then the other is change automatically.

Interesting point of view.
