I have read in various articles that coin and bullion dealers dislike 40% silver coins (and sometimes War Nickels). Is that true? I see on bullion sites that with silver spot around $25, that they are selling bulk 1965-1969 Kennedy halves for about $4/coin. The melt value would theoretically be around $3.50.

What can you reasonably expect when buying or selling 40% Kennedy halves? Relative to melt, I guess, since the silver price fluctuates.

There are extra handling costs associated with 40% halves, I understand, so you can expect a higher dealer take on their exchange.

40% has always brought less of a premium and when the time comes to sell, expect less of a premium from shop owners. My LCS will typically give spot or slightly back for 90%, always back from spot for 40%. From what I've heard anyways, I never sell silver to them.

$4 or even just over seems to be the going rate where spot stands. Zurie has 4 BU rolls on the selling forum at $3.75 each. Very fair IMO.

For BU coins? Yes, $3.75 seems super reasonable if the melt value at $25 is about $3.50.

So if I were to buy or sell 40% person-to-person, it sounds like $2.50-3.00 might be a sensible starting point for well circulated coins.
