The photos are the ones supplied by the seller, so please try to work with less than perfect photos. Please note that while the shield details appear to be typically weakly struck, the hair, gown and clasp details are strong. I see wear on the reverse on the eagle's breast and, perhaps, the claws. The eye and the head look sharp. The seller says there is a "pinwheel" effect to the coin, and that the color is "dead on", whatever that means. Thanks for taking a look and offering your learned opinions and wild guesses alike. Image: 2037.jpg79.05 KB

It's difficult to tell much from the photo, not able to see the shield and LIBERTY concerns me a little. To be on the safe side I'm going to say VF-35. With better pictures I expect it to be at least EF-40.

well defined details...however there's evidence of cleaning and hairlines so the net grade probably won't exceed VF-35...still a beautiful coin...enjoy! value $650 range

The coin isn't mine....yet.....I appreciate especially the value given as bidding guide. And I agree that the photos leave too much to be desired. So I appreciate you given it your best shot considering what you have to work with.

Too valuable a coin for purchase from those photos unless it's really cheap. All I'd say is VF. It could be EF but it could also be VF with problems so I wouldn't go over $400 on it.
No disrespect to atlashealth, but it would have to be a problem-free EF to be worth $650.

It is interesting because I immediately made a guess as to the seller's id based on the pictures as the picture style is distinctive. My guess was correct.
I have purchased items from this seller in the past and been pretty satisfied. He/she seems to sell pretty high quality stuff, describes the aspects of the coin well, and the photos represent what you get.
I think this one comes down to grade and price. I think based on my experience with this seller that you would probably be pleased with the coin but on the other hand, I would grade conservatively and bid accordingly. The pictures are a little over-exposed, so there is a bit of a gamble element here.
My guess is that it ends up going for somewhere in the low $500's. If it stays below that, I'd consider it a pretty good buy. If it gets up into the $600's, maybe too rich.
It's tough to get that date/mint mark in high grade. It is a nice looking coin.
All of the above is my opinion only. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks. It is always good to get the feedback of someone who has specific experience with a seller, and your feedback is most encouraging. I have come to the same conclusion as to the amounts I am willing to bid. He/she is a new seller to me, but I like this seller's selection.

I'm going to back up KenKat's experience with this seller; be confident that the coin and the price are all you have to worry about. Although the opinions about price and grading already given seem correct to me, I don't think this one is going to go cheap. Just last month, a PCGS VF30 with less detail than this one went for $747 at Heritage, and the potential buyers for this coin will know that. I'll be surprised if this one ends under $700.
Not that I'd advise bidding anywhere near that for this one.

Quote: I don't think this one is going to go cheap. That potential sure is there - it's definitely a coin that gets the blood flowing! There's a lot of worn out 20c pieces out there, so this one really stands out. And a Carson City too. Out of my league but it's gonna be fun to watch... Ken

Sigh...Unfortunately, it's now out of my league as well. I put in a bid of about $650 (hoping the wife didn't found out until it was won), but was immediately outbid. I can't get myself to go any higher unless the lotto hits later this evening. Should that happen, I'm going after a mint state 1875 CC. But please, go ahead and finish your popcorn.

this seller always seems to do very well on his coins on ebay and I guess thats because he always has coins that everyone wants for sale and his reputation as a reputable seller. He has had quite a few coins I wanted but went out of my price range to quickly for me to ever place a bid on

I heard today, from his wife, Jan, that all listed coins have been pulled because John is in the hospital with cancer, and she has more important things to attend to than ebay coin sales. So, all items are suspended until John is in recovery. Best wishes to both of them.....

I am sorry to hear that. I have bought a couple of Seated halves from him and have him on my favorite sellers list. As Bryan said, he has some beautiful coins and many get bid out of my league. Best regards, Ken

This is the first ebay coin dealer that I have seen mentioned to receive unanimous praise for accuracy of description and integrity in business. I just discovered him, but apparently too late, pending recovery.
