1976-D Quarter in a 2x2
Help with grade please.

Looks like wear in the hair, but I think it's the 2x2 and camera causing that. In hand it does not look handled. There is a nick above the ear and the eye.

Thanks
Dan

Gouge in hair holds it to MS-63, I'm guessing.

It has a full rim on the drum, which is a major positive. Obviously late die state, with the radial flow lines.

Is the frosting of wear on the hair, cheek, drummer hat, left sleeve due to the die, or was the coin circulated for 10 seconds? Too hard for me to tell. Either AU-58 or MS-63. A very nice coin, regardless. The ding might hold it back, but it also seems like a full drum can push the grade up a bit, depending on what articles you read. They ran those dies hard in 1975 and 1976, and there are lots of faintly struck drums out there.

Also, since it is a 1976-D, you should very carefully check it for both flavors of DDO. They are accredited by Cherrypicker's Guide and PCGS, and the FS-101 is over $700 in MS-60.

I'm thinking MS64-ish.

looking at the cheek marks along with the high points on the neck and around the collar area I'm at AU58 albeit a decent one.
