rougher than the average example I'm at VG8 details old cleaning. Original examples show alot more shadow toning within the devices, maybe its the lighting in pics but surface looks altered.

Not arguing, just trying to understand. How do we determine an old cleaning? Is it lack of uniform toning, small scratches, something else? I had wondered at cleaning myself, but I wasn't sure what clues to examine.

fwiw, this coin sat untouched in my coin box for at least 35 years. I either bought it at a show because it was "old", or pop-pop gave it as a gift from his stash of silver coins from circulation.

a little too much light glare for me to call this one cleaned. but several folks are pretty much convinced it was. would like to see in natural lower light. I have it VG8/10 probably 10

That was window sill on a cloudy day. I can do patio on a sunny day in a little bit.

If magnification would help, I can also use my little iPad magnifier to zoom in on a specific section.

Less exposure/glare would definitely help. I don't see enough to call this one VG-10, so a rougher, more marked up, VG-08 for me. I am not convinced this one was cleaned. Better photos would definitely help make that call.

magnification will not help. your photo is sharp enough its the glare. maybe try it in shade. we have the grade based on the photos presented its whether the coin was cleaned or not and if it would grade straight. straight VG8 retail maybe $30. detailed probably no less than half that so your're not talking a lot of $$

From the shadowed edge of a sunlit table. No digital zoom, cropped directly from the original. Not quite as crisp as I'd prefer, but perhaps adequate.

It's cleaned, but to confirm this for yourself, a scope is very useful. You'll see surface abrasions and (usually) residue.

Occasionally I'll find a luster-less coin that has a flat, mattish appearance that hasn't been cleaned, but has spent a long time in pockets.

I will give it a try this evening. Where would the abrasions be clear? Do I look on high points, fields, crevices?

The cleaning is very apparent.

The parallel hairlines on the face and neck seem to indicate a cleaning at some time.
