I was watching a YouTube video on a coin show. At one point, a dealer pulls out a book that is supposed to help one when buying Morgan dollars. I believe the title is "Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection".

I want to fill in holes in my Morgan dollar collection but, as a novice, worry about fakes. I can't afford to make too many purchase mistakes. A good book would be useful.

So far only found one book for sale on ebay for $100. Too expensive for me. Is there an alternative, less expensive book that is equally useful?

Hi, Mike. It's certainly a scary proposition buying any coin with the avalanche of rapidly improving fakes coming at us these days. I wanted to pass along the following website for your reference.

While this isn't specifically designed to detect counterfeit Morgan dollars, it does help acquaint you with the different features of the coin. If you learn the pertinent parts here I think it will help. And, there is no substitute for looking at a ton of them - get to know what they "should" look like. I don't have a good book recommendation, but I'm sure someone else will provide that. Best wishes in your ongoing project!

Thanks for the tips. Will look them over and add to my favorites.

I found the book mentioned using the GA Pines Library system which lets you gets books from any GA library shipped to your local library for checkout. When it arrives, I can scan the pages of interest. A no-cost solution. Happy, happy, happy. javascript:insertsmilie('')
