that's a popular location for die chips on the current design

the nickel's metal composition is currently the hardest the mint strikes for circulating coinage

the mint can harden nickel dies to match, but over hardening makes the dies more brittle, and thus more likely to chip

One of my favorite little things to find on current model nickels. I have a whole collection tucked away to study in the future.
